Poverty reduction programmes and human rights

Introduction

In 2004-05, the Council started a project on poverty, which was to have examined how human rights methods and principles could increase the effectiveness of official programmes to eliminate poverty. Country reports on specific programmes were completed in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Chile, Ghana and Thailand in 2005.

A review of the research took place in Thailand in mid-2005 and a draft report, based on the research but also developing an overall argument, was to have been submitted by the end of the year. Unfortunately it was not delivered and, since the Council cannot reconstruct a research process retrospectively or rework a text that does not exist, the Secretariat was obliged to cancel the project in 2008.

The original working papers, including two papers on poverty, and the Project Design, are available on this website.
