Corruption and human rights - Consultations in Kampala 20 May 2008
The Council is preparing a project on corruption and human rights. The first of two reports linked to the project is now ready for consultation. It discusses how acts of corruption and violations of rights are linked, and at potential tensions between anti-corruption practice and human rights principles. Prior to the 11th Council meeting, Research Director Magdalena Sepúlveda and External Relations Coordinator Mariette Grange held three consultations on the draft report in Kampala. Some twenty representatives of Ugandan civil society and representatives of UN agencies including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, gave input during a session organised in cooperation with the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative. A second meeting was held with a dozen United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) senior officials involved in governance and poverty programmes, and a third with diplomatic representatives and representatives of donor governments involved in human rights, corruption and development, organised in cooperation with the Swedish Embassy in Kampala.
The Council welcomes further input and undertakes to examine carefully the comments we receive, and take advice into consideration when drafting the final report. The report is expected to become available in September. For further information please contact Magdalena Sepulveda.
